Help Maui Families Recover—For Years to Come
The wildfire lasted days. Its health effects may last for years.
MauiWES is building one of the most comprehensive post-disaster health-screening and recovery programs ever conducted. Through more than 4,000 appointments, we have already provided health information, referrals, and support to more than 2,500 adults and children affected by the Maui wildfires.
Each MauiWES appointment brings multiple services together in one trusted, community-based setting, including:

Lung-health and breathing assessments

Blood pressure and cardiometabolic health checks

Screening for exposure to metals and other environmental contaminants
-
Mental-health assessments and support
-
Evaluation of housing, food, employment, insurance, and other recovery needs

Personal health results and referrals to healthcare and community services
-
Long-term follow-up to understand how health and recovery change over time
This is more than a research study. It is a long-term commitment to helping Maui families understand their health, connect with services, and ensure that their experiences guide the recovery.

Support from the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund, Kaiser Permanente, the National Institutes of Health, the State of Hawaiʻi, Maui County, and other partners has made this work possible. However, MauiWES remains significantly underfunded relative to the scale and duration of the need.

Volunteer With Us
MauiWES depends on dedicated community volunteers who help us serve participants each week.
We especially welcome volunteers with experience in healthcare, community outreach, data collection, translation, or participant support. Multilingual volunteers—including speakers of Spanish, Tagalog, Ilocano, Tongan, Vietnamese, Chinese, Hawaiian, and other languages spoken across Maui—are especially needed.
